Care in Our Control: Managing Innovation in Ontario's Multi-Payer Health Care System
How can Ontario better prioritize innovation when it comes to health care spending?
The fourth report in the Ontario Chamber of Commerce’s (OCC) Health Transformation Initiative series, Care in Our Control: Managing Innovation in Ontario’s Multi-Payer Health Care System, examines why Ontario struggles to capture value for money spent in the health care system.
As health innovations become more sophisticated, patient quality of life greatly improves. However, the Ontario health care system has difficulty properly evaluating and adopting health innovations like pharmaceuticals and medical devices, placing fiscal pressure on both public and private payers (including individuals and employers).
In order to adopt innovation while ensuring the province’s system is fiscally sustainable, the government must better understand the value that innovation can bring across the system, to other public services, and to the health and wellness of Ontarians.
